The Trash Game Server runs on
Windows 2k, Win XP, or anything newer. It will not run on Win98 or WinME.
The Trash Game Server uses
almost no CPU and little memory (about 8-20 MB).
The server is installed as a
Windows Service so that it can run without anyone being logged in.
By default, the server process not configured to
automatically run when the system boots.
If you would like the server process to run whenever the
system boots, regardless of user logon, follow these steps:
1) Go to the Control Panel/Admin
Tools/Services
2) Locate the Trash Game Server entry, click
properties
3) Change Trash Game Server's startup type
from Manual to Automatic
Please be careful about
turning off the Game Server as you may interrupt games. Use the PlanShutdown command to gracefully shutdown a
server. This will prevent new games from being created and will
cause the server to automatically stop after everyone has
disconnected from it.
Server
Console
If you want to run the server as a regular application, double
click GameServer.exe to see the server?s console.
If you would like to run as a Service, you can start it from
Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services/Trash Game Server. Once the service is
started, click on the Service Controller Link in your Start/Programs/Trash/Game
Server folder. This will bring up the server console.
Once in the console, use "dir" to list all commands;
"command_name /?" to get help for command.
Server
Setup
Once in the server console, you can give commands to the
server. In order to get a Game Server running, you need to enter some info
about it.
1) Type "name chosen_name" to
set the name of your server.
2) Type "location chosen_location"
to set the location of your server.
3) Type "startserver" to
start up the server. If running the server as an application (opposed to
running it as a service), you can type "hide" to replace the console
window with a taskbar icon.
By default, a Game Server is set to LAN-Only mode. In this
mode, only players on your LAN can create and join games running on your
server. If you want to allow public games to run on this server, use "ToggleLANMode". Then you probably want to increase the
max connections with "MaxConnections". You
should not use the public mode unless you run your server all the time. People
don't like it when their games get interrupted. If you run a public server, use
"PlanShutdown" a couple hours before you
plan to shutdown.
Server
Modes
LAN Mode
This mode is the default mode. Only players on your LAN
will be able to connect to your server.
LAN & Internet Mode
This mode will only let players on your LAN create games, but
anyone in the lobby can join them.
Internet Mode
In this mode, all players can create and join games on your
server.
Note: If you run a public server, use "PlanShutdown" a couple hours before you plan to
shutdown.
Server
Event Log
The console command ?eventlog? can be
used to see recent server events. ?flushlogs?
will write all events in memory to the file EventLog.txt.
If running as a service, serious errors are copied to the NT
event log. See Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Viewer.
Troubleshooting
I cannot run an Internet-mode server. It says the lobby
cannot connect to me.
Make sure you are forwarding the correct UDP port. If you
are running a public server, your machine must be reachable by the outside
world. If the lobby server cannot connect to your machine, it assumes
other players cannot either. If you are running firewall software, make
sure it is not blocking the port you are using. Make sure your router is
forwarding the correct UDP port (the port you chose to use) to the machine you
want to use as your game server. If you still have problems, try enabling
UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) on your router.
I cannot see my game server on the in-game server list.
If you are running a LAN-only mode server OR a
LAN-&-Internet mode server, players will not see the game server on the
in-game server list unless players connect to the Lobby Server using the same
IP address as the game server.
If you are running a LAN-&- Internet mode server, anyone WILL
be able to connect to games created on the game server. Under this mode,
only players that connect the Lobby Server with the same Internet connection as
the game server will be able to create games on the game server.
I cannot run a LAN-only mode server at my school network. I
want to share the game with my friends at school.
The Trash Game Server?s LAN-only mode was not designed to
necessarily work with large University or Corporate networks. This mode
is intended for typical home network setups. If you are on a large
network, you may still be able to run a public server.
I cannot see the ping number for any games on my server.
You need to open/forward the official port ping. This is
TCP port 445. Make sure this port not blocked by your firewall, and make
sure it is being forward to a computer on your network. If you are
using the Window?s Firewall, edit your ICMP settings to allow incoming echo
requests.
